Teenagers today are too obsessed with their looks. Many of them consider getting plastic surgery to alter their appearance.
Talking about plastic surgery, many Singaporeans would have thought of Dr. Woofles Wu, the famous plastic surgeon here in Singapore. Indeed, the number of teenagers receiving plastics surgery is on the rise. According to ‘The American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ (ASPS), over 333,000 people aged 18 and below had plastic surgery in year 2005, an increased from about 306,000 in year 2000.
Having plastic surgery is to have medical operations to repair injuries to a person’s skin, or to improve their appearance. Although plastic surgery may seem all unnatural and unreal, it does have its pros too. Plastic surgery helps to improve a woman’s confidence and self-esteem after being demoralized for having breast cancer. Let us put ourselves in a breast cancer patient’s shoe, imagine how elated she would be to have her breast rebuild after having surgery to remove the infected one. After all, a woman’s breast is her most valuable asset. Also, have we thought about babies who have birth defects like cleft lips or ear deformities? In these cases, plastic surgery is done to improve severe scarring and also to feel more comfortable about your own or somebody else’s appearance.
Imperfectness. Almost everybody is self-conscious about their body and wishes that something about their ugly body parts could be improved or changed. As the saying goes, ‘ Nothing is perfect ‘ but who does not want to be the outstanding one?
Mass media. Magazines like ‘Herworld’, ‘Cleo’ have portrayed models with slim and near perfect figures. Teenagers who chanced upon these magazines would be bound to get envy of their figures and would strive towards the aspired figure too. A male fan of Taiwan popular singer, Jolin Tsai, had even gone to change his sex and his body parts to look identical as the artist! On the television, advertisements of slimming companies with celebrities endorsed could be seen all the time. Teenagers would want to change and improve their body parts, as they would feel themselves looking better, having more confidence. Well, which teenager would not want to be in the center of attraction as they sashay down orchard road or even in school?
ASPS report the reason teenagers give for having plastic surgery: teenagers view plastic surgery as a way to fit in and look acceptable to friends and peers. Furthermore, having plastic surgery is a rising trend in America and even in Asian countries like Korea and Japan. People are even receiving plastic surgery packages during birthdays or occasions like Fathers’ or Mothers’ Day. Many parents in those countries had even sponsored their child to receive plastic surgery.
Despite all this fact, we all know that inner beauty is most important. A person who has the perfect figure but who does not have a caring heart is one that does not deserve to be respected. A woman with inner beauty but imperfect outer beauty is still one who everyone accepts and welcome. Besides, having plastic surgery like enlarging one’s breast can cause physical discomfort and even pain!
Be natural! Say no to plastic surgery!
